"For hygienic reasons, she asked for an unopened can of soda, she said. The flight attendant told her that she could not give her one but then handed an unopened can of beer to a man seated nearby. Ahmad questioned the flight attendant. "We are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people because they may use it as a weapon on the plane," she recalled the flight attendant telling her." http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/30/us/united-flight-muslim-chaplain/index.html I can't recall a flight (and I've been flying a lot, for years) where cans weren't opened first before being handed to a passenger. I feel someone should have come back at the fellow passenger who made rude comments, but other than that there is nothing outrageous about this incident.
On every flight I've been on, the can was opened.
I have flown well over 100 times on commercial airlines. If I ask for a full can during service it is often opened...but I have been served an unopened can on a number of occasions.
