One year we watched Magic School Bus (fun science) and Liberty Kids. It's not really a documentary, but my DS and I watched a couple of seasons of Little House on the Prairie (we've read several of the books together). It gave a sense of what it was like to grow up in that time. In one episode, the town came down with typhus (gee no antibiotics), in another, Mary lost her glasses and guess what? Pa couldn't just hop over to Mankato and get her another pair. We got a lot of mileage out if that show. 
Netflix has a series calls "Speed Kills." It's basically really fast predators taking down some hapless gazelles. DS loved it - and we talked about the food chain. Brutal. [/quote]
