OP here. Thanks for your responses. I'm really feeling alone because most of my friends have younger kids, and the ones who've gone through this are sooo far beyond it. I didn't expect to be so overwhelmed by this change. I've been so caught up in the college search, but it's over now, and, OMG, DD will be leaving home in a few months!! I'm excited that she's excited about college, and her summer job, and all the fun things she's going to be doing and learning, but I feel so sad that I won't be able to be there to experience them with her, as I have for her entire life! Maybe I'll get all my crying out now so I don't embarrass DD during her graduation! Our house will be so empty without her, and that's what I'm really dreading. I'm tearing up reading through the responses and writing mine!
We have a few more years but then it'll be us too. To some degree we've been seeing the milestones and "letting go" all along - their first day of daycare or preschool, first day of Kindergarten, first drop off party, first sleep over, going through years of Cub Scouts together and watching them cross over to Boy Scouts, going from elementary school to middle school and then on into to HS.... It all takes forever when you're doing it but next thing you know - in a blink of an eye they are young adults with big plans and even bigger dreams up there on that stage getting their HS diplomas. ((hugs)) Op.
