They take some element of a phenomenon, make it appealing, sellable, and expandable (so the customer base expands)--that's where I'd throw the Katie Perry "I kissed a girl" stuff. Not part of an "agenda" funded or promoted by LGBT gay rights or even social organizers, rather by producers who are all about the $$$ and could give a rat's ass about whether it's "authentic" or not.
