I'm one of those people who has had after death experiences with family members who have died and I do believe our consciousness continues on in some form after death - I've also had 2 out of body experiences - which add to my belief that our consciousness continues on when outside the body. My grandmother also told me of what happened to her when she "died" in the hospital - classic watching herself from the upper corner of the room while they worked on her. However, one experience I had while "awake" and not on drugs or anything which really changed the way I feel about our existence and our complete lack of understanding about the world around us and hence if we continue on in some form. My DH and I caught the worst flu ever from visiting relatives. We were so ill that our senses were very heightened - for example if a person touched the bed we were on with their finger, we would feel nauseous and vomit. I finally got well enough to get up. I decided to go outside and pick up our pile of newspapers. When I went outside I was assaulted by every molecule of scent out there - it was as if I could smell every individual molecule of odor - where each dog had peed and how many dogs had peed over the years on top of it - all extremely different, complex smells - literally hundreds if not thousands of "layers" of smells. I truly realized how much our body/senses are dampened and how much more there is going on in our world that we absolutely do not realize and are not in touch with. Despite our scientific abilities, I think it's mostly all still a big mystery!
