We are having this issue with my DS with HFA who is 7. A lot of it has to do with our Sp Ed school staff who are all new this year and have little to no experience with dealing with kids with ASD, a huge change from prior years when we did not have this problem. I second getting in a behaviorist to teach the school to how to deal with the negative attention seeking - stop rewarding the kid with attention. Easier said than done.
Just as a followup. Our school implemented the behavioral plan that the behaviorist came up with and lo and behold, most if not all of the problem behaviors are gone. You need someone including school staff who have experience with dealing with kids on the spectrum. You need the "right" behavioral chart that rewards positive behaviors and not the negative and lets the child build on success - not let them fail and get frustrated. We had a behavior chart earlier that our Sp Ed teacher with zero experience came up with that only made the behaviors worse.
