I wish her the best, but she represents why I consider the Board so problematic. Public school parents need a better voice in this city, but they are demeaned as "just a parent" when they get involved. There are very few current DCPS parents on the Board of Education. Instead, it is a bunch of "policy experts" who represent their professional affiliation's viewpoints and interests far better than the interests of current kids and families in DCPS. I hope she will stay connected to current parents and listen to their opinions and insights. I also hope she will go beyond Janney, Deal, and Wilson to understand the issues facing it other schools because the experience elsewhere, even in Ward 3, can be very different. And for the record, I was not a candidate or friend to any of the candidates in this race. I am just an informed and active DCPS parent who is dismayed by how education in DC is driven by national education battles instead of the reality of what is happening in our schools.

I do indeed wish her the best and hope that she looks out for all children's interests.  But I too wonder if this just underscores why we needed to have mayoral control.  The candidate who worked for and was backed by AFT won.  During the years of school board control, the school board seem to pay more attention to teachers' interests than to children's interests.  Hope those days are behind us. [/quote]
