I think his character is meant to give a reality check on other princes & the immediate, love at first sight stories you get in other Disney movies. Several of the characters express shock and concern that Ana would get engaged to a guy she just met, so that not so subtle - hey, you don't even know this guy! - message may be more useful for a kid who's seen all the other Disney movies and needs a reality check that real love isn't instantaneous.
