You could homeschool in one day more than what MCPS teaches directly to your child in a week. That is not an exaggeration. Most kids spend their day in free time with the new differentiation groups.
You know, I was just talking about this with DH! There is SO MUCH wasted time in my kid's school day. They watch videos for the 20 minutes at the end of the day at dismissal. Every single day. I understand they can't use that to 'teach', but how about letting the kids play games or something? Let the first grades do simple crossword puzzles that they can take home. Word searches? Anything! MCPS wants to lengthen the school day for elementary?? Ridiculous. My kid spends at least an hour during reading and math centers with nothing to do. The kids know that their work isn't checked. (Not blaming the teacher - she needs to give them something to do....). So, they just fool around. We can't afford private, so we're stuck for now. But, it is pretty frustrating.
