Because it's comfortable and they don't have to look good for anyone. I have a neighbor who puts in makeup and gets dressed before her husband comes home. I think this is kind of pathetic.
Yes, I can see how this could be quite pathetic. However, as a SAHM, I can kind of relate, but I do it for me. I'm sure you're thinking your neighbor does this to pretty herself up for her man, and maybe she does, but maybe it's just to make herself feel human at the end of a long day. I don't wear workout clothes out (unless I'm going to the gym), but as soon as I'm home, I change in to workout clothes or pj pants. I've done that for years, long before I had kids (I would change as soon as I came home from work). But now that I'm home most often, I find myself in my comfy clothes most of the day, sometimes hair unwashed in a ponytail, usually without makeup. When I worked, spending the day like that was a luxury! But now...even though I like the physical comfort, I start feeling a little blah and frumpy. Sometimes it feels better to put on normal clothes, flat-iron my hair, and put on makeup (I wear such minimal makeup, but at least something to smooth out my tone and reduce the shine). So...I do find myself sometimes getting dressed before my husband comes home (plus, he's out of town a lot). But I do it for me. I feel like around 4:30pm (on the days dh is home), my son is just getting up from his nap, a new period of the day is beginning, I'm pretty much done for the day with playing trains and watching Daniel Tiger because dh and ds will play outside for a while before and after dinner (I may or may not join them). It kind of feels like getting ready to go out for the evening, even though really I'm just having a beer while I make dinner. I don't know how to explain it, but getting dressed at the end of the day is all about making myself feel good.
