I think he sounds like a fairly typical self-absorbed type of man. He needs a woman to focus on him, build up his delicate ego, do things he is interested in, make him feel good. I don't quite see what he brings to the table.
I agree with this first part. However, OP has a point. Most men I know want to feel important, loved, appreciated, and basically like a king. That's not to say that men want a doormat (they don't!) or that they won't bring anything to the table or won't treat their woman like a queen. They are mutually exclusive. Men want their women to make them feel like "the man" or, rather, the best man they can be. Ask him about his day, dress up for him (even if he is the only person who will see you), sometimes say "yes" when you'd rather say "no" because you love him, tell him you're glad to see him when he/you gets home, side with him in front of others no matter what. Did I get that right, OP? I would also add, though it doesn't seem to matter as much to OP, take pride in your appearance. If you are overweight or getting older or whatever, just take care of yourself and look put together. OP doesn't seem to care, but almost every man I know wants a skinny girl.
