We don't have many openings because of the budget and when we do we have tons of applications.  Just letting you know that it's really hard out there right now, even in the government, which used to be easier to get into.

That said, if environmental law is your passion (or you think it is - you might change your tune once you actually start studying), and you will have no debt, you can try it out and see what you think.  I would suggest many, many internships and summer positions while in law school to try to set the groundwork for a job.  I think people are just trying to warn you about how difficult the market is.
