I'm an adoptive mom, and I'm sensitive to situations where people use the term "bio" when it's not relevant, because I strongly believe that once a kid is yours they're yours.  But, I was all set to write that in this case, using the word "bio" to distinguish children born to and raised by Mickey's, and someone who became his stepson after he was already an adult.

But I wasn't sure that Mickey's stepson became his stepson as an adult, so I looked up the dates to be sure, and realized that one of the 8 people that this article is referring to as Mickey Rooney's "bio children" was in fact adopted.  Jimmy Rooney was around 3 when Mickey married his mother, Carolyn Hockett and subsequently adopted him.   Since Jimmy is included in the 8, the term "bio" is simply wrong.

I also found out that the stepson who received Mickey's money was not an adult when Mickey married his mother* 35 years ago, had changed his last name to Rooney, and that Mickey had lived at Mark's home at the end of his life.

To me the distinction between bio children, step child he adopted, and a step child he parented but didn't adopt, is much less clear.  I can't really fault a man for choosing to leave a few thousand dollars to a child he helped raised who opened his home to him in a time of need.

*I can't figure out how old Mark Rooney was, only that he was younger than his brother Christopher, and Christopher appears to have been about 17.  Whether Mark was 16 or 1 when his mother married Mickey Rooney I do not know.
