Since you have your own vacation place, you could tell your MIL that you will "visit" them for a few days instead of for the whole vacation since it cuts into your own vacation days.  This would free you up to stay at a hotel for the shortened vacation.  DH could go a few days early if he insists but then join you when you arrive at the hotel.

MIL will probably still throw a fit but I would focus on hotel serenity instead.  :) [/quote]
