I have a friend who lives in the apartment building that is between Westland Middle School and the Westbard Giant. When she bought there she assumed that given that there wasn't even a street between her apartment and Westland that that's where her kid would be assigned, but it turned out that they are assigned to Wood Acres/Pyle/Whitman. Anyway, I don't know if there are houses in that area in the same situation, but you can walk to both Friendship Heights and Bethesda from Westland. Bethesda's more of a hike, but it's along the Capital Crescent Trail so it's a nice hike. Having said all that, I'd choose BCC over Whitman in a heartbeat, and did, but that isn't what you asked.
That's basically Wood Acres/Springfield which is about a 2 mile walk to friendship heights. From the Giant it is 1.7 miles. We've been super happy with Whitman but don't need to metro to work so didn't have to consider metro walkability. DC worked downtown last summer and did the bus to the metro which worked well but did add a bit to the commute.
