I'm pretty sure the extra $1-2 would mean a lot more to the nail tech than it does to you. I'm guessing most people tip $5 which is why he gave you that. Why not just ask for singles if that's what you really want.
Why I am responsible for giving my money to everyone who works low paying jobs, for simply doing their job? So what if it would mean more to him. Its mine. I worked for it. I truly don't understand the entitlement. Can I walk up to a millionaire with my hand out, and call him an asshole for not giving me a couple of hundred, since he can spare it? I do my job every day! I deserve it!
There is a difference between something that is customary and something that mandatory. No, you are not required to tip $5 (or anything at all), but that is our accepted practice in the United States. Personally, I tip my nail girl well because she does a fabulous job and I appreciate what she provides to me. I also tip at Starbucks because I appreciate that they are polite and remember my coffee order. Do I have to? No. But I've worked in service jobs before and I remember how appreciated as a person it made me feel.
