Although I understand your comment, I really can't stand this type of reasoning. One should be able to expect exceptional public schools. Period. That proposition should be entirely separate from private schools. Take DC as a cautionary tale. I have long believed that the fact that there were so many good private schools (and, well, so many good local suburban schools that folks could move to), meant that there wasn't enough focus on fixing the problem with the public schools. Let's not let that happen to MCPS. Let's instead keep the pressure on in order to make MCPS the best it can be. Let's not go down that futile road of "if you don't like it, send your kid to private school."
While I agree with this from a public good standpoint, the reality is do you want your child to receive an inferior education while you pursue the greater good? Parents have very little influence over MCPS. The majority of voters don't have kids in MCPS so they only know something is very wrong when the test scores plummet. This will happen because the scores will drop. You'll see demographic changes similar to DC where the educated parents who seek good schools don't move to MCPS taking away the kids that produce high scores regardless of a poor educational system. The international community with advanced degrees is already starting to relocate to VA or choosing not to move to MCPS. MCPS relations with the Asian community that produces top scores is pretty poor and they don't seem to realize that they drive up the scores.
