I view a bad review by the post as a sign that it is a place I want to eat! Outside of his foodie friends, Tom never likes good, simple food. Give him small plates of duck confit from some dude who hiked the Himalayas for 7 years and he will give it 4 stars. For general purpose all around good food (and I would consider brunch a time for good food, good service, and good conversation, not necessarily the greatest of everything) founding farmers delivers. Of course now that OP threw out 8407 all I want to do is go back there again!
Please try to expand your horizons a little. There are plenty of places he recommends that are basic restaurants besides duck confit. You actually might see what good food is really like. http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/search/q,categories_Restaurants,editorialreviews_Reviewed,locations_Maryland,mealtypes_Brunch,searchType_facet,sortSpecifier_EditorsPick.html
I'm a chef, so I'm good with what good food is. Founding Farmers is good, not great. 8407 is great. Sietsema was good years ago, but his heart went out of the business over the past couple of years. Sad really.
