Macys gift receipt entitles you to the lowest price in last 60 days. NOT the price the grifter paid(we asked). So it is definitely possible you were ripped off by Macys and your wife could even be in the right. We suspect a lot of stores do this. As a gift, you have no idea what the price paid really was and the stores could just refund lowest price and who would know? People wouldn't ask gift giver so it's a prefect con by retailers. I want everyone to buy gifts with cash and give full receipt in sealed envelope. Then if you return you get true value back in cash. I know. Pipe dream. We should all just give cash according to economists.
Thanks for posting this. I discovered this the hard way years ago when my mom had given me a sweater with gift receipt and I went to return it because it wasn't my style and got the lowest sale (incl hypothetical coupons that could have been used) price in 60 days. That was NOT what my mom had paid -- and she sent me her original receipt to prove it. But I only knew that because my mom had made some comment about something else being the same price and I told her what macys had actually refunded me. We were both pretty annoyed -- and even more do because it's a pretty obnoxious way to rip off customers trying to do something nice when giving a gift. I don't do gift receipts at all anymore. Screw that.
