You are young and able. What more do you need?? However, there are a few simple yet difficult things you must do. You can't feel sorry for yourself, you can't feel like a victim, you have to take what ever job you can find and be the hardest worker in the company. Be the first to arrive and the last one the leave. Concentrate on the work and not the pay. When you are at work you are there to produce and make money for the company; not to make friends with your coworkers. THINK, THINK, THINK, always look for opportunities for education and advancements. Save a small portion of every paycheck. Watch the world around you. There are opportunities everywhere in America if you can see them. However , know that there are people who want to take advantage of you also. If someone offers you a deal that seems too good to be true - it is too good to be true. You can do this if you are smart and you work harder than anyone else.
how will saving a small portion of her paycheck help her be financially ok during retirement?
It's all part of a system of working hader than anyone else, accumulating wealth, goodwill, respect and experience. Opportunities will avail themselves to you if you are actively engaged in the betterment of your company and your life. A key component is saving a part of your earnings. Having some quantity of wealth; large or small keeps your head in the game looking for opportunities to profit. Without any accumulated wealth there is less incentive to search for opportunities because you know in advance you'll not be able to buy into any opportunities you may find, because you have no funds to buy in regardless of what you may find.
