OP here. I'm I guess what people would call a "goth". I've toned my look down a lot and am not OTT now. I've worn all black for the past 25 years. I wear mostly long black skirts and black tunics/tops. My DS will be starting school soon, and my husband wants me to stop wearing all black, change my hair style, and take out my nose ring, because he says he's afraid other kids will make fun of DS for having a "freaky mom". He's also afraid that other parents will be put off by me. Do you think he's right?
I think DH is trying to say that he thinks you'd look nice with a new look. Do you do the pale white makeup and black hair, too? Because otherwise, black top/bottom and a nose ring wouldn't stand out much to me. How are you received when meeting new people, usually? Not that you should dress for others, but if you don't get negative reactions now, I don't know why you would when your son starts school.
Brow liner and eyeliner is the only makeup I use. I've never been able to stand the feeling of foundation, and also can't stand wearing mascara. I am pretty pale, but naturally. I have black hair with chunky blond streaks. I do have a lot of tattoos. I used to have women walk up to me and say insulting things to me, but that was back in the 90's, in Tennessee. I can't really think of any time more recently that I've felt I got a negative reaction from someone. I really feel comfortable with the way I look, and I know I would feel very uncomfortable if I tried to look differently. However, I don't want to be responsible for my son getting pick on, or bullied, etc.
I'm the pp. I say just be yourself. It doesn't sound like you have a particularly "out there" look, and it seems shitty (IMO) for your husband to use "but our kid might get picked on" as a way to get you to change your look. Kids get picked on for myriad things, most of which aren't easy to predict. I hope my kid doesn't get picked on because his mother still wears yellow gold jewelry.
