I had a trainer who was effective at first, but then his focus on our sessions took a rapid decline. He was sending text messages during sessions, stepped outside during a session to make a phone call, would watch TV on the gym televisions and count my reps incorrectly, would frequently arrive late...there were SO many issues. I would have stopped seeing him a lot sooner, but I had to pay for sessions up front and I didn't want to lose out on the money. Did I learn some things? Yes. Was it worth the money I spent? Absolutely not. I should have stopped after the initial 12 sessions. ...sorry, I'm a little bitter. :)
You definitely have to find a good trainer and there are wonderful traienrs out there, even at some of the big box gyms. In your sitaution you should have spoken up and called the traienr out on their behavior or made a complaint to they gym.
