I don't understand how it works. DH and I max out out 401ks. So as a family we out away $35k per year plus employee matches. If one of us were to stay home, how much could we contribute to a Roth or IRA? Is there a cap like the 401ks?
After tax IRA contribution limits are minuscule compared to what you can do at a good company. When I went from law firm partner to SAH, my annual retirement contribution went from about $50,000+ to $5000. (Not looking for sympathy, it's just a fact.).
