You know, I guess it's all in the timing when you hear the "best" advice. Otherwise these are just simplistic cliches. I remember when my brother told me "Never wake a sleeping baby." My daughter was a newborn and he seemed like a genius for telling me that -- I had been waking her up to change her diaper. Duh.
I thoroughly agree with this. I remember when I was younger, had just met my DH, but was in a very serious long-term relationship with someone else. I felt so confused, as I felt like I hardly knew my DH at the time, yet had very strong feelings for him, and I felt extremely guilty to my boyfriend about having developed feelings for someone else (not to mention realizing that I had fallen out of love with him). I'd been with my boyfriend for 4 years; we had talked about marriage, our parents had been introduced to each other in a rather formal way, and both our families expected us to get married. Well, I told my father about the situation, and he said in a very serious and sympathetic way: "Just follow your heart." Now, that does sound like a very simplistic cliche, but that piece of advice gave me the courage to make the right decision: to breakup with my boyfriend and go with where my heart was. And it was the best piece of advice I ever listened to. I've now been with my DH for 9 blissful years, and believe we will remain a happy couple well into our retirement days.
