sun and sand is a pain? wow. Give me pain anyday. My kids LOVE the beach. WIth a small baby, you can put them on a blanket, covered with umbrella while they nap and you can read a book and stare at the ocean. You can taken them for a dip in the pool. you can take them to a restaurant on the beach, you can put them in a carrier and take a walk. etc. Yes, they get dirtier than if you took them to a museum in an ergo, but I guess it depends on what kind of vacation you want.
I don't know what beaches you've been too so maybe there are exceptions - but based on my experience a baby on a blanket would be covered in sand. Sand in the diaper. Sand in the face. Sand in their clothes. They can't play in the sand, they can only go in the water for short bursts, and you'd have to worry about sunburn. Yes, to me that is a pain. We love the beach. But not with a young infant.
How does baby get covered in sand if they arent even crawling yet?? Geez. Once you lay the blanket down and nobody walks on it, baby will be find. I never found my infant having the problem with sand like you describe, maybe should ask what beach YOU have been to I have also seen parents bring a pack n play down to the beach as well. It IS do-able
