You don't need to drink insane amounts of water; I did with my first, and all that resulted in was the tech imaging my bladder and repeating ad nauseum, "your bladder is SO FULL." (Yes, and your pressing on it doesn't help) I thought the water was pretty SOP before 20 weeks or so. I also don't think it's a ridiculous question--glad you've gotten good advice, OP!
