These schools - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. Scroll past the first page and you'll see many great public universities located all over the country. Going to the 50th, or 60th or 70th ranked public university in a country with thousands of universities and colleges is nothing to sneeze at, especially when tuition is much lower and you can stay in state. Anyone who pays full price for Ivies or elite publics is either filthy rich or dumb as hell.
If you can get into an Ivy you probably can get into a UNC or UVA or Michigan and don't need to go to a 50th ranked state school. The vast majority of people would assume that someone who goes to Harvard (or another Ivy) is smarter or more driven than someone who goes to Maryland. It's just more impressive. Not everyone wants to stay in state. Most kids want to venture out. If my kid got into an Ivy I would do what I could to send him there, not so much GWU or BU.
True. However take PSU or UW-Madison for instance (both in the 40's for rankings), many might feel it isn't worth double or 2.5x the cost to go out of state to another public school.
