If you don't have to commute, then I'd focus on something in Loudoun or Frederick Counties, either in downtown Leesburg/Frederick, Ashburn/Urbana, as your family/likely travel patterns dictate. Less traffic in day-to-day errands, you can get a nicer house for the $$$, etc. You should be able to get something in (any of) Fairfax, Burke, or (maybe) Springfield; likewise you can get something in Gaithersburg or Rockville for that price range.
