My 5th grader has been in FLES since 1st grade and just knows various random Spanish words with no conversational skills. She will not get to skip even a year of Spanish in middle school. Next year she'll take 1/2 a year of something called "transitional Spanish" and then have Spanish 1 (if she doesn't decide to take another language instead) in 7th grade. I was a supporter of FLES but as it's implemented I think it's a waste of time that takes precious instructional time away from the core academic subjects.
It really depends on the child. It may be that your child doesn't possess much foreign language ability or doesn't take advantage of opportunities in the area -- like children's theater in Spanish. The goals for FLES are pretty reasonable and you can only expect so much proficiency in the amount of time devoted to it. http://www.apsva.us/cms/lib2/VA01000586/Centricity/Domain/82/FLES%20Spanish%20Framework%202010.pdf Count yourself lucky that you have it -- do you really think that more math or language arts will make that much difference?
