I will admit to complete bias, but I am a huge Country Day School fan. CDS' kindergarten program is excellent. My kids went there and they entered 1st grade reading and ready, enthuiastic students with the appropriate mindset for lifetime learning. They have gone on to be successful students in both public and independent schools. Like all schools, in any given year there may be space blips or teachers that aren't the correct fit. But what makes CDS so special, so loved is the culture of the school, extending back for decades. It is hard to quantify but it defines the school, and it is a commitment to meaningful learning and creative exploration. The curriculum is top notch, the teachers are just superb. They bring the best of engaged, intuitive instruction with enthusiasm and caring. The parent body is involved and valued by the school administration. The grounds are fabulous. Yet somehow it is more than the sum of its parts. I know I sound like I am gushing, but choosing CDS was one of the best decisions I have made for my children.
I am a long-time CDS family and agree with this assessment. I'll add that many of the concerns that parents have cited in the past on this thread - such as the bumps with the K program - were connected to the leadership of the former head, who was not a great fit for the school culture. The current head is well-liked and respected by the families and staff. She is truly wonderful. The board has become more engaged with the parent community and has added current parents, which was an important and valuable change. The school has become so much reflective and flexible under the current Head's leadership. For example, offering more options for extending the day, offering grade-level Family Fun nights, and changing the format of the school's auction. The school has always been a very warm and lovely place as PP stated, but the vibe now is truly fantastic. Our DC is thriving there, and I absolutely would recommend the program to anyone considering it.
