We are loving this. It’s not as unhinged as Welcome to Nightvale but if you enjoy that kind of horror/comedy mashup you’ll enjoy Widow’s Bay. Casting for the supporting roles is outstanding.
Who in the supporting cast do you find outstanding? Honestly curious. I feel like it is the Matthew Rhys show. For example, I love the actor who played Joel on Somebody Somewhere, and so far he is completely underused in this show.
Kate O'Flynn plays Patricia and is phenomenal. She was especially good in this week's episode which featured her, but also she regularly gets the most laugh out loud funny lines, like in episode 7 when she pops into the room Matthew Rhys is in with
to grab her purse, her line delivery and tone was so pitch perfect, I was rolling. Also the whole episode where she plans the party, she is just nailing that mix of likable, pathetic, and kooky. Stephen Root as Wyck is one of those actors who has been around forever and you recognize him immediately and just kind of assume he's doing the same character actor thing he always does, but in later episodes his character has more depth and vulnerability. Plus I love his relationship with Matthew Rhys' character. Yes Jeff Hiller is great and used sparingly, but in the episode where Matthew Rhys' character is high, they use Hiller's face and very specific timing to the hilt. It's so good. I also think the actors playing the sheriff and Tom's son Evan are fantastic. The son character is really getting rounded out in recent episodes and I love his dynamic with Matthew Rhys. There's a scene early on where they are eating cheesesteaks from tv trays and their silent dynamic felt very real in terms of what a single dad who is sort of high strung and prickly and his teenage son who is sort of rebellious and prickly would be like, but also there is this deep, deep love and affection between them anyway. I looooooove this show. I wasn't sure how I felt about the horror elements early on because they do really scare me (this week's episode was very stressful to me) but the humor makes it so cathartic and I'm now very invested in the characters and plot so I'll just have to deal with it!
