We will be moving to the dmv when our oldest will be entering 7th (one year from now). I know that 6th and 9th are typical entry years. I’m hoping to identify schools that take 7th graders. My daughter is smart and earns good grades but I don’t think the pressure cooker schools will be a good fit for her. We want something that will challenge her, foster creativity and critical thinking and has a kind/warm atmosphere. Anywhere that is a 30 minute or less commute from NW DC will work. Religious schools are likely not a good fit. Any suggestions for schools that fit this description and admit kids in 7th will be helpful. I’ve done some online research, but I’m sure I’m missing some. Thanks!
I think you’ve described Field! But yes, cast a wide net. The other schools mentioned by other posters are legitimately great schools that might be right. Sometimes, the best school is the one that says “yes” and admits your daughter.
She described Field, but 7th is not an entry year. In previous years there were some 7th grade admissions but now they maintain a healthy waitlist. It doesn't hurt to ask but our friends who applied for 10th were told there were no spots. There are half the kids in 7th than 10th.
Fair points. Although with the new building opening next spring, the OP’s timing might be great with Field’s expanding capacity.
It's not a "new building". They are revamping the fields, and adding some interesting components to the current building, that will allow them be more academically competitive and will expand enrollment by 10%. That's 6 kids per grade in HS. Their current wait list exceeds that number.
Well, I guess to be accurate, we could call it an addition instead of a new building because it will be connected to the existing main building, but it is a 15,000 ft.² edition. In and of itself it’s pretty phenomenal, and even more so that all the money was raised, ANC and zoning board approved it, and completion all will have taken less than three years. This video shows it all: https://www.fieldschool.org/support-us/think-bold-be-inspired
Yes, it’s a great addition to Field and parents/students are thrilled, but it will not substantially change enrollment. That’s not the point of the project.
You don’t think growing from 375 students to 405 or more students was one of the drivers? I mean, even if they didn’t add any students the new facilities improve the education educational experience for the 375 that are there and that’s a worthy reason to do it but when you add 15,000 ft.² you do have space for more students and the tuition dollars matter.
Yes, an extra 1.5 mill in tuition is indeed helpful, and keep in mind more teachers will also be hired. My point of posting that the project is not about enrollment is because a super zealous poster keeps mentioning this expansion as if they are substantially increasing enrollment- meaning an easier admit. An extra 6-8 kids per grade is not going to move that needle.
