I work for a large organization and was recently asked to move over to lead a team in a different part of the company than where I have worked in for the past 14 years. It was a promotion and I knew the reputation of the person who oversees the function that would be my new boss was that she can be tough, but I have worked for tough bosses before. Let’s just say she is much worse than imagined and I am now contemplating leaving the company because I don’t know how I will do this for a couple years. She is very respected at the organization despite her reputation for being a bully, and since joining I found out several people in the role before me have left the team and company because of her. I have worked my way up at this company and really don’t want to leave, but HR has been useless for others and they won’t move/transfer me for at least 2 years (that’s the policy when you take a new role). She is blunt, rude and condescending, gives very unclear direction and then is upset that we didn’t deliver exactly what she wanted, she is too hands-off/unavailable yet a micromanager at the same time about certain things and expects everything to be done in 30 seconds. Any tips to survive this for a couple years and then hope to be able to move elsewhere in the company? Or do I just look to jump ship because it’s not worth it to take the abuse? And no, highly unlikely she is going anywhere.
I worked for someone like this and quit after 6 months. I had no job lined up. It was a government job that I had accepted from outside. I was devastated. But she was destroying my life. It all worked out in the end. I did get another job after unemployment for four months.
