They often don’t know what to say when I ask something “what excites you about this field? What have you always wondered about or wanted to know?” I kinda blame rubrics. Since grade school they have sort of been spoon fed minimum standards but haven’t really engaged with open ended questions. For their final papers it was obvious who had asked GPT what to write about because so many students wrote about the same three questions and it was a question that none of them had previously demonstrated any interest in.
