It's a Dominican college. Dominicans are among the most conservative Catholic orders. (One of them is responsible for the conversion of JD Vance.) PC has stricter dorm rules than most colleges, including most Catholic colleges.
Saying it is "conservative" is applying political terms to a religious institution. You may say "orthodox" instead of "conservative". Providence doesn't answer to the republican party. Catholicism, even what you refer to as "conservative" Catholicism, has elements that republicans don't agree with. For example they are against the death penalty, they are against what they deem "unjust war" (most wars we have fought), they believe in helping the poor, and believe that wealthy people have an obligation (although not necessarily through taxation) to help the less fortunate. Yes, they also are against abortion. They don't believe in pre-marital sex, and they believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.. So, is that conservative or liberal?. It is neither. It is a set of religious beliefs. Indeed, Catholics tend to vote as a group 50/50 between the political parties historically.
