I also wish I could just binge this! It’s definitely got me wondering more about the logistics of gilead than the handmaids tale did for whatever reason. And also I was dying when the one wife tells the guardian they would like the card to be read. I love reading so much I can’t imagine a world where I’m not allowed to read.
What’s weird also is clearly the wife knows how to read. We are 15 years into Gilead and she’s like 40. I felt like she had pre read the notes and wouldn’t just ask for something to be read out loud unless she knew what it said. There’s at least 2 things that don’t make sense to me — 1) the way they blame infertility on the woman, saying if a girl doesn’t get her period it’s because she’s willful and god is punishing her. Aren’t most of the wives infertile? And lots of their kids came from fertile wicked women. So that doesn’t track that they would malign infertile women. Also I think in th original book, the strong implication is that most of the infertility was on the male side (which is why Serena set June up with Nick — lots of wives were doing this since they realized their husbands had bum sperm but would never admit it). So I feel like this thing with lots of girls not even getting their period is new, and also maybe not biologically sensible. 2) why on earth would the step mom allow that boy band hot guardian around her step daughter? That is clearly a time bomb that any woman could see. I’d be like — he’s great but you need to give us a middle aged guardian with a pot belly please. Four things I’d like to know more about: 1) the step mom. She’s a clever girl and would like to know what she did in the before times and in the first decade of Gilead. It surprises me that as the second wife she’s not younger than the commander. Why wouldn’t he get a younger wife? Her father must be important. Also, I feel like still waters run deep. Maybe she’s banging the hot guardian kid. 2) the economy and system of production. They seem to have stuff like artificial coloring, butter, eggs, refined flour, etc. where is all that coming from? And is th environmental disaster not affecting other countries in the same way? Did all the toxic cleanup in the colonies that the feminist gender traitors did a decade plus ago help rehab the land? 3) what’s up with the handmaids? My sense from the end of the last series was that after the handmaid rebellion and aunt Lydia realizing their husbands problems with th system, that was maybe the end of that system. Or did they just institute “reforms” (like retired handmaids get a pension instead of being sent to a brothel). If it’s gone, where are the commanders now getting kids — are they just stealing them from econowives? I guess some of the commanders have fertile wives now since they are picking women based on this. I’m also disappointed that Aunt Lydia, who seemed to have some real character growth last series, is still cutting out people’s tongues. I’m also curious about the career path foc th younger aunts — maybe commanders daughters that never got their period and so weren’t marriage eligible? 4) does June know that Agnes/hannah is at the girls school? Is that what the extraction was—to get her before her marriage? Seems like using the hot boy band guardian might be easier, and just extract them both. Also, obviously the best friend is a lesbian who’s in love with Agnes, right? And there’s clearly some reason we don’t know why aunt Lydia is treating daisy different from all the other Pearl girls (also why didn’t they change her name to put her under cover, if Gilead was already looking for Daisy??)
