I think he just annoys people generally and that comment just crystallized why he annoys people. He's arrogant and shallow. He is a talented actor who gets amazing roles and gets these crazy opportunities to work with great directors. It gives the impression he's a deep and sensitive person because how does he play these roles otherwise? But he's not. He's shallow, doesn't particularly care about the arts, full of himself, etc. It's not really just the one comment, it's his whole vibe, but it's like the one comment finally allowed people to admit to themselves they don't like him and think he's a f**k boi. Most Hollywood actors are, so this is not a huge surprise, but people just thought he was different because of the caliber of roles he's played. They thought he was a Michael B. Jordan, he's actually a young Zach Braff but just a better, more versatile actor.
Yet most people agree with him. If you suggested people on here dress up and go to the opera and ballet you'd be laughed out for being such an out of touch boomer.
But no one is demanding everyone go to the ballet or opera. I think most people fall into two camps: (1) don't care about ballet/opera, don't go, don't think about it, and (2) passionately love them. Chalamet took the secret third option of vocally hating on them and comparing them negatively to movies. It was weird because no one asked him what is opinion was on other art forms, he just randomly singled them out to shit on them. It would be like if you asked a colleague how their day was going and they replied, "Better than Mark in accounting, that guy is irrelevant and no one likes him." WTF.
It makes more sense knowing that his family is super into ballet, and he probably got dragged to a lot of ballet things growing up. Not that different from kids of lawyers hating on lawyers, or kids of professors hating on academia. But I agree that he has a little bit of an irritating vibe. I do think he's a good actor.
