Midd never had leadership problems. Laurie Patton wasn't bad, she was just "Midd". She was too cautious and slow to make decisions but to say that she was a problem is disingenuous. [/quote]

She did nothing about a persistent budget deficit for a decade. She also botched the school's response to the Charles Murray incident. Good riddance. Agree that Ian Baucom is doing a great job. [/quote]

The Charles Murray (Bell Curve) incident was a no win situation for Patton and she handled it as well as could be expected given the give no ground stances of each group. The administration underestimated the loathing of Murray by the left and didn’t coordinate security as well as they should have. Today, the only people who fault the handling of the incident is the reactionary right.

The budget deficit while nagging was not very consequential given the size of Middlebury’s endowment. It could have been easily closed at any time by increasing the endowment draw to the level of Colby and many other peer schools. I agree with the idea that Patton was slow to address the deficit and didn’t make the needed changes once it was obvious that MIIS wasn’t going to grow its way out of being a financial burden.

I agree that Baucomb is a big upgrade.[/quote]
