Some men do become better fathers after divorce. Sometimes the divorce was a wakeup call. Sometimes the divorce face the father the ability to parent without the mom treating him as some sort of subordinate assistant. When you have your kids 50 percent of the time, you have a lot of opportunity to be a good parent. Or a bad one.
I think often it's a mixed bag. I think my brother became a better interactive parent after his divorce. On his own, he had to figure out his relationship with each of his kids himself, and he realized he wanted positive relationships with them and became a more compassionate, authoritative dad. Less yelling, less sarcasm, more emotional connection and support. However, his parenting abilities on the non-interactive stuff stayed the same or even declined. Stuff like making big choices on education, being aware of and responsible for medical issues, thinking and planning ahead to handle scheduling logistics or conflicts. The result is that his kids love him and they have a good time together but no one really trusts him to show up like a responsible adult when it counts. His ex does it all. One of their kids has a serious medical diagnosis (epilepsy) and my brother has noped out on it in so many ways other than being emotionally supportive of his kid. I know it's frustrating for my (now former) SIL. It's frustrating to me and I'm not directly involved. So there's good and bad.
