Close Marks

Makes sense to me. Given that this is an 'expensive' closure, they want to make darn sure. How many times have we thought there would be a lot of snow and then we wake up to a tiny coating on lawns yet school cancellations. This signals to people to figure out alternative plans for tomorrow and also let's us sleep in til 9 before we have to wake up to see if we truly have to get the kids off to school. Good call.
I disagree. People don't read the blurb. They just see 2hr delay. If it changes to closure later, it's an irritating change in the plans they've already formed. It would be better if MCPS had waited several more hours to announce something that had zero risk of changing. All meteorologists in the area had announced at least 3 inches of snow for Monday in the immediate metro, the accumulating snow to fall overnight. Capitol Weather Gang confidently predicted that most school systems would close, based on weather, because they're not in the business of sussing out the mind games that superintendents play with their families. School closings and delays operate on a pendulum basis in this area, and are based in part on how much blowback schools got from the previous delay or closure, instead of being based on actual conditions on the ground. This is not a rational way to go about managing school systems effectively.
