Because if the point of the thought experiment is to go from broke and homeless to stable, you have to have some basics in place before you can get employed. But if you have basics, you can go out and get a job the first day. And if you have enough basics, you can spend some time selling them off and pursuing a better job than the one you can get on day 1. Etc. Plus your socioeconomic background and education matter a lot. [/quote]
