We are lucky in CC DC that we have SJC, GDS, Sidwell, STA, Maret and WIS all within a 1 to 2 mile radius.

All great schools and nearly everyone we know attending limited their kids to schools that were essentially walking distances to no more than a short bus ride.

I literally just saw someone in CCMD with an O'Connell magnet on their car, so everyone has their own reasons and tolerance for these things. Lots of  families also deal with long commutes to send their kids to single sex schools like Gonzaga, Visi, SAAS, DeMatha, etc., so why not SJC if it suits your family's needs? Long commutes are not uncommon, for any of these schools. I'm not saying the commute isn't a consideration, but it's not the end of the world and it may not always be as simple as saying "just swap this school for that one" if there are truly things that you value about the school that would make the commute worthwhile. Only you can determine what you're willing to put up with. There will be trade offs, but some of them may be worth it to you, OP.[/quote]
