My second child is due in a few weeks, and I am deciding between two hospitals where my OB delivers - a Catholic hospital and a non-religiously affiliated hospital. (I moved from the DMV to my hometown after my first was born, so this will be my first delivery in my current city.) I had assumed I would deliver at the Catholic hospital since it’s where my OB prefers to deliver. It’s also where my sister delivered several years ago, and she had a great experience there. However this particular hospital was NOT a Catholic hospital at the time that my sister delivered there. It was acquired by Ascension within the past couple of years. I guess I hadn’t fully appreciated what the implications of this recent acquisition might mean for patient care until the past few weeks. I’m now wondering if I should opt for the other hospital. I wouldn’t choose to go to a Catholic hospital with a suspected ectopic pregnancy. I understand how hospital policy might result in staff delaying necessary care in order to establish that a pregnancy is truly non-viable in that situation. What I’m less clear on is what the specific concerns are when it comes to delivering what will likely be a full-term baby in a Catholic hospital. I am going to have a conversation with my OB about this this week, but are there specific complications or procedures that might be handled differently in a Catholic hospital? I am not interested in having my tubes tied in the event that I end up needing a C-section, so the availability of that procedure is not going to impact my decision. (I also have heard that some providers are willing to perform tubal ligations at this particular hospital.)
You can’t choose the catholic one OP! You really can’t! U.S. bishops have turned even more transphobic than ever before recently!! Please don’t go to one of these MAGA hospitals!
