Parents lead the tours and there is a certain amount of variability in what the parents focus on. Also parents tend to know a lot about certain things about the school and not others. Unfortunately that means that the way the school comes across may be missing certain elements depending on the guide. Instead of admissions people leading those, they meet with every prospective family and every prospective student does a visit (half) day, which many peer schools don't do. Also they don't go inside classrooms as much on the tours, in my experience at least during the year we were looking. One thing GDS is very big on is teaching kids to handle things themselves with school - to reach out to teachers themselves about questions or issues, or go to the counselors, etc. rather than telling mom & dad and having them contact the school on their behalf. They really hammer this idea at the Curriculum Night (like Back to School Night). I think that's great. It also means that parents know less about their kids' academics because the school is actively discouraging the parents from being super involved. Parents can still see the kids' progress and assignments online but many parents take this to heart and pay less attention to the academic work. That gets more this way toward the end of MS and then really strongly so in HS. I do wonder if this means some tour guides just don't know so much about the academics...
This. I would suggest this would be super useful. I always find peeking into how kids learn and whether they look bored is super informative.
