It all depends on your expenses. What is the plan for healthcare? How much is the mortgage and other spending? What will come in from social security? Offhand I would say no just guessing at what your lifestyle is like but certainly there are people out there who could live off $4 million.
+1 Think about healthcare and college. I would want to have 100% saved (or guaranteed thru the employer/past employer) for both kids for college before I would even consider retiring. We are mid 50s, and I'm pricing our ACA plans (we retired but still have for a few years thru "work"). Last year for 2 of us (think 54) was $2300 for just a silver medical (that means $7k/14K ind/fam deductible, no OON coverage)....this year that same plan is now $3300 (no we don't get subsidies---we are rich, retiring at mid 50s). Now add in 2 kids and you'd be at over $4K/month for healthcare with $7/$14K dedcubitles, no dental or vision. So I'd have to assume you could spend $5K/month for it all. That's $60K. And it's only going to go up as you age, and plans get "worse and cover less" until we get a good single payer system (which isn't going to happen anytime soon). You won't get SS until at least 62, most likely 65 by the time you are that age. I personally wouldn't do it. You also will have a mortgage for a long time. I'd work for another 5 years, aggressively save to pay for college, future healthcare and retirement and to be able to pay off the mortgage (wouldn't actually do it if low interest rates, but I'd want to have the $$ available)
