My 7th grader has a phone but I still need to hear from a parent before she goes to that person's house. Also, many of her classmates are in the group chat using the family iPad or a smart watch, not on the child's personal phone. I mistakenly thought "everybody" had phones but it turned out they mostly just had icloud accounts.
Yeah, my kid does have a phone and some people do think the kids without are babies. But in terms of communication and planning, it’s not a big deal. I don’t know a single kid who doesn’t have access to an iPad. It works just fine for them. We emphasize with our own kid that the phone is for communication, not playing games or social media. I would have preferred waiting but we decided not to fight that battle.
An Ipad is the same thing without cellular.
