In both cases there was a divorce, but I am not sure whether the divorce was the cause of mental illness or their behavior got to the point where it was already unbearable to the spouse although not obvious to an outsider, and both women refused to see a psychiatrist. SIL also had a flare/ newly diagnosed auto immune disease around the same time. The friend’s wife (ex-wife, actually) recently had an MRI which showed some brain changes - this may be the beginning of something organic. [/quote]
