My white kids have attended/attend a DCPS high school and they are very aware when we visit a college that is overwhelmingly white. They understand that no college is going to be as diverse as DCPS but it matters to them to be around people of different backgrounds, experiences, etc. They don't want to just hang out with white kids who have gone to majority white suburban schools in the midwest who have never met anyone of another color.
Same with my white kids, except they attended a very diverse Montgomery County high school. Both are happy at their fairly diverse (urban) colleges, one in the Northeast and one in the Midwest. It was a factor for them for sure.
