When private sector people get let go, downsized or fired, there is no sympathy, and it is just another day. When federal employees, who get paid back, or for a load there is a lot of woah is me and hand wringing. They will be OK. It’s more of a well now it’s your turn to feel what we’ve all felt before.
Of course there's sympathy. Not only on a personal level, but there are feds whose jobs are to enforce worker protections related to layoffs and help make sure there are resources (even if administered by the state, the funding and laws are often federal). Stuff like COBRA doesn't happen by itself. It's weird that you want those people to feel pain.
