Thankfully yes. Age 51, 18 years in. Just missed VERA and could not FORK, became I was “mission critical”. Elon came at our agency early and fast, and it was so toxic and stressful. Theoretically, I was a low RIF risk. But, I looked at the big picture and decided that even if I avoided a RIF, I wasn’t going to make it 3.5 more years, given the level of stress, chaos and ever increasing productivity demands. Plus, they gave up the lease on our office in 2022, so RTO was a 1.5 hour commute each way (vs 30-45 minutes 2x a week from 2010 to COVID). In my job as a Fed. I was subject matter expert and did training and mentoring and practicing in a niche area of law. I love what I do, and avoided applying for management jobs like the plague. I’m highly qualified in my very technical area of expertise. But, there just aren’t that many private sector jobs that use my legal skillset is valuable. And, I’m too old to start over. I felt so trapped I started sending out feelers to people I knew in early May, and by Memorial Day, had an offer to go into a boutique firm as a partner. Without ever starting a formal job search or doing more than networking/ letting friends in the legal community know I wanted out. Sure enough, a friend had a friend who pose firm needed my skillset. I fill a slot the firm really needs— they had been referring the caseload I am responsible for out. It’s lucrative if done well, so they were really looking for someone who could do it in house. I’ve been there 5 weeks (selling the house and moving took time) and it’s proving to be a great move. Especially considering the shutdown/ mass firing of Fed idiocy. I got lucky, because the private sector jobs in my area are few and far between (but so are the people like me who have the knowledge to fill them). Also because I am double barred in VA and another state. This offer took us back to our home state. DH and I had been discussing moving back when we could and retiring in the city where I now work, his job is 100% remote, and we have one kid who is out of college and one kid who is a senior. My job was the only thing keeping us in the DMV. Peace Out.
